Installing Windows 2003 Terminal Server

Installing Windows 2003 Terminal Server

Please note this is just a checklist that I use at work, A full install guide will replace this soon.

When installing windows 2003 terminal server try to keep to the following standard.

• Create the C:\ drive to have a capacity of 16384mb, Then create a D: drive with the remaining space
• Configure the NICs,
• Using “Disk Administrator” assign the CD-Rom drive letter to drive Z: Then create a D: drive with the rest of the hard-disk space and format it NTFS
• Set the page file for D: 4096 - 4096. Click set icon after making the change. Reboot
• Run Defrag on C: and D: drive
• When you come to the components, untick “Accessibility Options” “Games” “Windows Messaging” and “Communications” Under Accessories un-tick screen savers. Under multimedia un-tick everything apart from Media Player. Tick Terminal Services
• Rename the computer to an appropriate name
• Right Click C: drive and click properties. Untick Allow indexing for sub folders. Do the same for D:
• Rename the C: and D: drive to an appropriate name
• In server manager change the description to to an appropriate name
• Set the regional settings and set as system default
• Go into Device manager and disable all hardware you don’t need, USB, Com ports and so on. Including NICs that are not connected to the network.
• Re-boot system
• Put the computer into the domain
• Re-boot system
• Open up user manager for domains, Enter the relevant logins / groups into the local groups
• Configure Startup / Recovery settings
• Run service pack 1
• Install all applications to D:\ drive, Make sure you use “change user /install”
• After installing Adobe reader, Winzip, Office, Windows media player, open up the program
• Open Adobe reader click help check for updates. Then click on Edit > Preferences, go through options, make sure you take off look for updates.
• Go to control panel, Java, untick check for updates.
• Change the file association on windows 2003 .doc and .xls click advanced tab untick browse in same window
• Go to http://support.microsoft.com/default...260151&sd=tech and set permissions
• Install the time service
• Stop and set to manual the following services, Automatic Updates, Computer Browser, Error Reporting Service, Help and support(Set to disabled), Special Administration Console Helper(Set to disabled), Telephony (Set to disabled), Windows Audio (Set to disabled), Wireless Configuration
• Click Start > Settings > Printers. File > Server Properties > Advanced tab > Untick all boxes.
• Right click “My network Places” Properties. Select network team > Properties. Untick the 2 boxes. Remove “File and Print Sharing”
• Run windows update
• Run Office update
• Install Metaframe Presentation 4.0
• Install all Metaframe Presentation 4.0 hotfixes
• Run regedit and go to \\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\R un delete all the entries apart from “ICABAR” This will stop un-necessary processes starting up when a user logs on.
• Browse to C:\WTSRV\Profiles\Default User\ Go through every folder and delete the shortcuts you don’t need.
• Browse to C:\WTSRV\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs create a folder called “Administrative tools” if this does not exist. Then copy all admin folders into here from the start menu like, Compaq, Diskeeper, F-secure, Metaframe, NT admins tools. Citrix
• Right click on C:\WTSRV\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Administrative Tools delete the users group, Tick the replace permissions on sub folders and click okay.
• Browse to C:\WTSRV\Profiles\All Users\ and delete unwanted shortcuts from Start menu, Start menu\Startup and Desktop
• Configure Citrix Connection Configuration

Hi, Is it best practice to install applications before citrix PS4 as it says in your guide? I thought you always installed citrix first. What is correct?
