Do you use 64 bit OS + PS4?
Does anyone use 64bit OS and PS4?? Im thinking of testing it in my environment and I was wondering if anyone has used it and have you seen improvements?? If you have what improvements over 32bit OS ??

I'm about to install 40 servers with x64 OS and PS4. The testing looks good so far. There are some good white papers on x64 TS and Citrix, I would suggest doing your homework. x64 memory scales, but in general, x32 apps use more memory then they did in x32 OS due to overhead of running x32 apps on x64 OS. CPU is another area that scales. Dual CPU use to be enough on x32, but Quad scales very well along with I/O throughput.
I spoke with a MS engineer and was basically told that if the applications run fine with Windows Server 2003 x32 w/SP1, then I should be fine with x64. TEST TEST TEST!!

Mlesak,
Could you tell us about your new server hardware? Dual or quad processors, how much RAM? Are you serving a desktop or silo'ed published applications?
I have 70, dual processor servers that I expect to reformat, install 2003 and PS4 enterprise. I currently serve a locked down Windows 2000 desktop with Office 97 suite and a few other applications using Metaframe 1.8. Yes we're behind the times, but it's been a very stable and fast configuration for us.
Thank you,
Scott

I have dual processor servers, 4GIG of RAM, windows 2003 with PS4 Advanced.
I also have a metaframe 1.8 environment, Not very stable due to printer drivers

We've disabled the "auto-created" printer facility on our MF 1.8 servers and we utilize two print server clusters (2 pairs of servers) for hosting a few thousand network printers.

We are using HP BL25p blades with 2 dual core AMD CPUs, 8 GB of RAM, 2 36GB 15K U320 drives in a mirror set. There are some interesting articles about how quad CPU scales in x64 and the additional memory is for scaling up inside of out (like the good old days of x32!).
We publish 6 apps, no desktops. One of the apps is a memory pig, so x64 should help out a lot in this area. We were going to go with 16GB of RAM, but $ of 2GB sticks at the time of purchase was high.

Any chance the reason that application is memory hungry is because it is really a 32bit app running in a 64bit world? I archived an article here: http://www.rafterv.com/2006/08/08/64...it-citrix-ps4/ for my own use in some upcoming projects next calendar year. My reference appears at the bottom of the post.

You raise a good point ScotPage, however there are still some applications which are just poorly designed and do not function well in a terminal services environment.
I've got a "32 Bit" application running in a "32 Bit" world and it messes with the memory to such an extent that if we don't reboot the server every 2 to 3 days we have loadsa problems. Initially we suspected a poor server build but after loads and loads of investigation found it was this one particular application. The developer of the application is currently rewriting his application using best practice guides from Microsoft on writing Terminal Server aware applications to repair the issues.

No. The application was a pig in 32-bit and with the 2GB limit of user mode memory with 32-bit, 64-bit will allow us to scale up instead of out.
